Treyarch Needs To Nerf Or Remove Zero From 'Call Of Duty: Black Ops 4'

Erik Kain

I write about video games, entertainment and culture.

This article is more than 2 years old.

I recently wrote about howCall of Duty: Black Ops 4players on PlayStation 4 were upset by the addition of a new specialist, Zero, who many consider incredibly overpowered.

In that post, I noted how Zero is able to hack and take control of the other team's entire suite of active scorestreaks, from UAVs to Attack Choppers, and many Specialist's gear and supers, including turrets and trip mines. Her super merely has to charge, meaning players don't even have to play well to take control of the entire match, essentially, especially during the late game.

Some gamers thought that this was developer Treyarch's attempt to make the game more "casual friendly" but I argued that this was bad for players of all skill levels. Perusing theBlack Ops 4subreddit today, I stumbled on yet another anti-Zero post, this time from user u/SpookyScaryFish who self-describes as a lower-skilled player who rarely gets enough kills in a row to unleash powerful scorestreaks. At first, this meant that Zero was a way to experiment with high-powered scorestreaks, since they could simply hack the other team. Then:

I stole my fair share of attack choppers and drone squads, but a friend of mine convinced me to try using Crash and improve my game. I changed my streaks to UAV, Attack Chopper, and Gunship, not thinking I would get them but giving it a shot anyway. After a day of grinding and slowly getting closer and closer to the streaks, I finally got them towards the end of the second round of Domination, and immediately called in the chopper and ran to the back of green house (NUK3TOWN) and used the Gunship. Before I could even get a kill with the Gunship since I was trying to figure out the controls, the enemy Zero hacked the Gunship and kicked me out of it. I stood there in disbelief for a second, and before I knew it my own attack chopper killed me.

I thought Zero was supposed to be designed for new players (or bad players like me) and give them a sense of accomplishment, but after having my first real accomplishment stripped away from me in seconds, I've realized that Zero doesn't make me want to play anymore if I can't even get rewarded as I grind to get better.

This is one of myriad posts I've read complaining about Zero. I took to the forums in the first place to see if other people were experiencing the same frustrations as I was in matches suddenly dominated by Zero, and it turns out I'm far from alone. I refuse to even play as Zero because I think her super is cheap and unsportsmanlike. I'm not the bestBlack Ops 4player by a long shot, but I'm decent at the game and I'd rather cut my teeth against skilled opponents than simply get hacked and have my gear and scorestreaks stolen---and I don't care to steal other players' either. I wouldn't mind a scorestreak that countered powerful scorestreaks like Sniper's Nest, Attack Chopper and so forth, but Zero's super is just unfair and makes the game worse in just about every way.

This is a 2XP weekend forBlack Ops 4but I'm not even caring to play it that much because of how drastically Zero changes the game. I spent the other evening playing against bots inCall of Duty: GhostsMP instead (I'm pretty sure you can't get a real person match together in that game anymore.) It was fun! Zero is not fun. She's not fun to play against, and I don't even care to have her on my team.

Treyarch either needs to radically nerf this new Specialist or remove her completely. The sensible thing to do would be to temporarily remove her while they come up with a completely different super, and do so before she launches on Xbox One and PC. I doubt Treyarch will do that, but that's my best suggestion. The developer also needs to address upset fans over this as soon as possible. Deafening silence is no substitute for communication.

Treyarch should really take another page from Epic Games. That developer recently ran into similar backlash fromFortnitefans upset over the wildly overpowered Infinity Blade. Their response was perfect:

Heya folks,

We messed up and rolled out the Infinity Blade overpowered / without good counters, especially in the end game.

The Infinity Blade has been Vaulted and we are re-evaluating our approach to Mythic items.

Thanks for calling us out on this!

Granted, it took Epic a few days (during which they made some uncharacteristically tone-deaf "fixes") before they came around, but come around they did. Let's hope Treyarch does as well.

Oh, and how about a playlist with no specialists at all while we're at it? I bet a bunch of players would be okay with that.
